Five, No Six Questions for You

As we careen into the last part of the semester here at SUNYIT, it occurs to me that teachers and students really do operate on a different sort of "time". We have semesters and breaks, summers "off" that mean we do all the things we can't do during the semesters, and weird times (like weekends and the wee hours of the morning) that we work on things for classes.

In effect, when you go from being a college student to being a college teacher not much changes as far as the overall schedule of things. But, what if . . .

you're reading this and you're neither a teacher nor a student? What if you were a student until somewhat recently and now you're in the "real world"? Wanna answer five questions? You know you do. Here they are:

1) What is the most similar thing about being in college and being in the "real world"? I always put those two words in quotes because I'm not sure such a thing exists.

2) What is the most different?

3) What do you miss the most (related to curricular stuff, please, not beer bongs, beer, or bongs) about college?

4) What do you miss the least?

5) If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently? Different major? More partying? More studying?

6) What is a favorite college memory?

Yes, those of us who teach college can also respond, whether or not we believe that what we do involves any sort of real. You don't have to answer all of the questions; it's not a quiz.

Happy Thursday

  1. 1) I would say that I still have to do my daily grind. Get out of bed at a reasonable hour in order to get ready, and do all the bathroom, and eating stuff.

    2) I don't get to see any of the friends I have. Many are drifting away and I am finding it really hard to keep in touch. I consider the children I watch during the day my friends lol

    3) I miss the random facts that would be thrown at me in a class. Or being the only person in the class who could throw a random fact out to a class. I miss the smart people I used to be surrounded by.

    4) The very few "stupid" people that I used to be around. Those were the people who miraculously got by (by cheating mostly) and annoyed me when they did well by doing so. They were also the ones who caused trouble in the dorms and made me have to stay up later at night to "babysit" and as a result lose sleep and grade points due to my inability to focus the next morning.

    5) I think I picked the wrong major, and I would liked to have gone to the Culinary Insitute, or gone into Early Childhood. Also had I been forced in to taking Psychology regardless, I think I would have read more. Sometimes I don't know how I passed when I hardly read a textbook. (all English ones aside, cause most of those were novels and I don't mind reading those)

    6) Overall I think my favorite memories were when professors would call me up after class (in the process scaring the crap out of me, cause I thought maybe I had done something wrong) and tell me that I did something, or said something that amazed or interested them. I find that when a professor brings themself to an intellectual level with the student they make learning more enjoyable... maybe that is why I took so many English courses? I think my first COM course at SUNYIT was my all time favorite course ever. I got to investigate female serial killers and was shocked by how many there were and the number of victims they had!
